    Russia has defeated Bulgaria in the quarterfinals of men's volleyball, three sets to one. The victory means that the Russians will advance to the semifinals to play the winner of USA vs. Serbia.

Team USA defeated the Italians 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 15-6 to reach the semifinal against Cuba.
  • China's quest for gold continues Posted Tuesday, August 19, 2008 4:03 AM ET China's quest for an Olympic gold medal continues after the host nation defeated Russia 25-22, 27-25, 25-19. The defending Olympic champion will face the unbeaten Brazilians in the semifinal on Thursday.

  • Cuba defeats Serbia Posted Monday, August 18, 2008 6:47 PM ET The first match of the women's quarterfinals is in the books. Cuba continued its domination from Group play, and won its sixth straight match of the games, defeating Serbia 26-24, 25-19, 26-24.

    The curious doping scandal surrounding Bulgaria's Plamen Konstantinov is a rarity in the volleyball world. Doping doesn't provide much of an advantage in volleyball. But even more than that, the sport has long held strict rules.

  • Team USA wins fifth straight match Posted Monday, August 18, 2008 2:26 AM ET By the Associated Press In its final preliminary match, the U.S. men's volleyball team defeated Japan easily and finished on top of Group A with a perfect 5-0 record. The Americans will take on Serbia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

  • Germany loses in three sets Posted Monday, August 18, 2008 12:01 AM ET Germany's men's volleyball team lost to Brazil in three sets and has likely been eliminated from the Olympic tournament. The Germans' last hope of advancing lies in winless Egypt, which would have to beat Serbia 3-0.
  • Serbia last team to advance Posted Sunday, August 17, 2008 11:26 PM ET Serbia was the last men's volleyball team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Beijing Games. The Serbs defeated Egypt 25-16, 25-13, 25-17 and surpassed Germany. The elimination rounds will start Wednesday.
  • Poland hands Russia first loss Posted Sunday, August 17, 2008 9:50 PM ET Poland's men's volleyball team handed Russia its first loss of the Olympic tournament, winning in five sets. Poland, Russia and Brazil all finished preliminary play with a 4-1 record.

Scoring system

Volleyball matches are best-of-five sets. In the first four sets, the first team to 25 with a two-point lead wins. Fifth sets are played to 15 with a lead of two.
