  • Danes end on a positive note Posted Saturday, August 23, 2008 6:24 PM ET Denmark's handball men ended the Beijing Games on a positive note as they beat South Korea 37-26 to finish seventh at the Olympics. Mikkel Hansen led Denmark with eight goals, South Korea's Ko Kyungsoo scored 10.
  • Norway's girls golden for the first time Posted Saturday, August 23, 2008 2:14 AM ET By the Associated Press Norway's handball women have won the Olympic gold medal for the first time. The Norwegians, who won all eight matches at the Beijing Games, defeated Russia 34-27. Linn-Kristin Riegelhuth led Norway with nine goals.

    South Korea's women claimed bronze and prevented a European medal sweep at the Olympic handball tournaments. The Koreans went on a 6-1 run in the final minutes of the game to defeat Hungary 33-28.

  • France eases past China to secure fifth place Posted Friday, August 22, 2008 8:43 PM ET The French women's handball team defeated host China easily to finish the Beijing Games in fifth place. France's Sophie Herbrecht and Veronique Pecqueux-Rolland led with seven goals each in their 31-23 win.
  • Romania beats Sweden to finish seventh Posted Friday, August 22, 2008 6:31 PM ET Romania's women's handball team finished the Beijing Games in seventh place with a 34-30 win over Sweden. Romania's Ionela Stanca and Laura Meirosu had six goals each. Isabelle Gullden scored nine for Sweden.

    France and Iceland won their semifinals in men's handball, ensuring a first-time Olympic gold medalist. Iceland beat Spain 36-30, while France defeated reigning Olympic champion Croatia 25-23 to set up Sunday's final.

    Gro Hammerseng scored as time expired to lead Norway to a 29-28 win over South Korea on Thursday in the Olympic women's handball semifinals. The Norwegians will face Russia, which defeated Hungary, on Saturday.

Team Handball

In Olympic handball, the 12 men's teams and 12 women's teams are split into two groups by random draw. An Olympic handball team's roster comprises 15 players.
